Basilica di Santa Maria del Lauro in Meta

Meta’s most important place of worship, was erected according to legend where a temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva once stood.

Upon entering the town, one is immediately struck by the majestic basilica of Santa Maria del Lauro, dedicated to the Madonna del Lauro, the patroness of sailors. Since the 9th century, Meta has been known for the maritime tradition of its inhabitants, a tradition that continues to thrive to this day.

The interior of the basilica features a Latin cross plan, consisting of three naves connected by a system of columns topped with arches. The structure is adorned with a towering Baroque-style bell tower.
